Liverpool starlet Ki-Jana Hoever has sent an Instagram message to teammate Gini Wijnaldum following his goalscoring turn for the Netherlands on Monday evening.
The midfielder headed home the fourth goal in a 4-0 stroll past Estonia in Euro 2020 qualifying, and posted a photo to his personal Instagram with the caption: “Solid win with a clean sheet.
“I’ve got something with scoring a 4th goal.”
Replying to that post, Hoever, who himself is a Dutch youth international, simply said: “Spitta”.
Wijnaldum now has eight goal involvements in nine games for the national side, with his late header against Estonia taking his personal tally to five goals in that spell, with three further assists. By contrast, he managed just three goals for Liverpool in 35 Premier League appearances, and that is naturally raising some questions as to why he is so prolific in the orange shirt of his country, but less so in the red of his club. Quite simply, it is because he is asked to play in a different role for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Wijnaldum occupies a deeper area, with a greater focus on possession retention and supplying the attacking players in front of him. The fact that he has recorded a pass completion rate of 90.7% so far this season, as per Whoscored, should tell you how effectively he is fulfilling that brief. Sure, if he played further up the field for Liverpool, in the same number 10 role that he does for the Netherlands, he would probably hit more goals, but then Klopp would be losing a vital cog in his midfield engine room.
