Le Tissier blown away by Adrian

|

Matt Le Tissier has taken to Twitter to praise Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian for his contribution in the Reds’ 2-0 defeat to Napoli on Tuesday night.

The veteran Spaniard put in an impressive display on his Champions League debut, and made one world class in particular from a Dries Mertens volley.

Taking to social media during the match to hail the stopper, Le Tissier wrote on his personal account: “Wow.

“Adrian has just made the save of the season.”

OPINION

To be fair, if this isn’t save of the season it will be right up there amongst the contenders. Adrian has no right to reach Mertens’ volley, let alone to keep it out. There are really three things that are exceptional about this stop. Firstly, the Spaniard’s movement is first rate. To get his feet moving at that pace across his goal-line is not only a difficult skill, but also shows a great level of anticipation. Secondly, he actually dives very, very early, to the point that he is airborne by the time that Mertens connects. That’s a very unorthodox approach to take, and a risky one if you get it wrong, but Adrian manages to hang in the air so well, and to spread his body to such a size, that it really makes the task for the Napoli  striker so much harder. Thirdly, and finally, the strength in Adrian’s wrist is almost superhuman. To reach the ball is one thing, but then to have the power and poise to force it up and over the bar is incredible. A properly special save.
