Liverpool are set to step up their transfer hunt for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner this season as they plot a future signing, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football news outlet claim that the Reds have held long-standing interest in the 23-year-old but they are set to take their efforts to the next level over the coming months, launching regular scouting missions to carry out an extensive analysis of his qualities.

The report adds that Werner will be available to any potential suitors for less than £30million due to a release clause of £27million included in his recently-signed contract.

Werner has made a lightning-fast start to the Bundesliga campaign, netting five goals in three games to help Leipzig to three successive victories, while he scored 19 times in 37 appearances across all competitions last season.

Opinion

This is one transfer link that will just not go away and, as they say, there is no smoke without fire. It seems as though it is time Liverpool decide whether they are going to push the boat out for Werner or move there attentions to other targets and his performances between now and January could play a big part in his future. Five goals in three games is not a bad way to start a season and you can be sure his early form will have piqued Liverpool’s interest – if they were not already watching on from the stands. The only question is whether they would truly need him with the attacking options they already have at Anfield. He would have to do something exceptional to oust Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah from the starting XI and while the Reds could do with bolstering the quality they have on the bench, Werner is unlikely to be happy sitting alongside Divock Origi as backup. He will demand a starting role and right now, Liverpool cannot offer him that.
