Dejan Lovren has lifted the lid on the failed negotiations which could have seen him swap Liverpool for Rome over the summer.

The Croatian international was heavily linked with a move to the Italian capital to join Roma, with both a permanent and a loan move touted before the European transfer window slammed shut on Monday.

Despite plenty of speculation, the 30-year has remained at Anfield as part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad, the player admitting that he was looking for a new club this summer.

However, he says that he was not happy to move on loan, insisting he should have nothing to prove when trying to moving clubs.

Lovren told Sportske Novosti: “I’m kind of relieved when all this is over. I was more fed up with this almost daily reading and hearing about my departure or stay in Liverpool. It was every day in the media, Dejan is there, so he is here, so he is there again.

“I have nothing to lie about, I was thinking about changing the club. I knew I did my best for Liverpool. There were several clubs, there were serious stories, Milan answered, and the most specific was Roma. Negotiations began but, quite frankly, they did not go well.

“I am not one of those who want to go somewhere and prove to someone who I am and what I am, how I play, whether I am ready or not. No, I’m not that player. I’m a real pro, I’m second in the world to the national team, I’ve done great things with Liverpool, I don’t deserve to go out on loan somewhere!”

Opinion

For Lovren’s sake, being completely transparent is probably the best thing he could do for his Liverpool career. There will be plenty of supporters at Anfield thinking he is a drain on resources and that he might have turned down a move just to sit on the bench and pick up his wage. Instead, it seems as though a lack of faith from Roma caused his move to collapse and considering he could have been sitting on the bench in Italy, it seems best for him to stick around on Merseyside. He has been open and honest about his desire to leave but now that the window is shut, he will turn his attentions to trying to force his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s plans. That is going to be a task easier said than done considering those ahead of him in the pecking order but if he wants to impress potential suitors, he has got to do everything he can to return to the first-team.
