James Pearce has suggested that he would not be surprised to see Joe Gomez and Gini Wijnaldum feature for Liverpool against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Reds suffered a 2-0 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League in Tuesday evening, and the respected reporter expects to see Jurgen Klopp make changes ahead of his side’s trip to the capital this weekend.

Writing in a Q&A for the Athletic, he said: “I wonder whether Gomez might come in at the back either at FB or CB.

“Midfield will certainly change. I’d expect Wijnaldum to start on Sunday.”

OPINION

Bringing Wijnaldum back into the team feels like an absolute no-brainer. The Dutchman has been brilliant so far this season, and can perhaps feel a little aggrieved to have been left out against Napoli. You can understand why Klopp saw fit to opt for James Milner instead, of course, and on another night, his experience and guile in the centre of the park could have been the difference. Instead, he put in a pretty lacklustre display. His three tackles and two successful dribbles may look good on paper, as per Whoscored, but his pass completion rate of 78.4% illustrates a fairly wasteful performance that certainly didn’t help his team too much. By contrast, Wijnaldum has registered a pass completion rate of 92% this term, as per Whoscored, and you would like to think that his added efficiency will make him a shoo-in for a spot against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.
