Rodney Marsh has hailed Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum for a “10/10” performance in the Netherlands’ 4-2 win against Germany on Friday night.

Wijnaldum, 28, scored and assisted a goal as Ronald Koeman’s side came from behind to pick up a huge three points in their bid to win qualification for next summer’s European Championships.

Former QPR and Manchester City striker Marsh was thoroughly impressed by what he saw from the Liverpool midfielder in Holland’s win on Friday night and took to his personal Twitter account to show just how blown away he was.

“I watch a lot of football. Followers will know I rarely give 10/10. Georginio Wijnaldum welcome to that club,” he said.

Marsh added: “Influenced the game in all areas. Pressed high when out of possession. Followed the runner from midfield. Ran past the striker several times. Created 4/5 opportunities. Complete performance.”

OPINION

Wijnaldum was on a complete new level on Friday night, one that Liverpool fans probably haven’t seen from the former Newcastle midfielder so far this season. Wijnaldum was at the centre of practically everything good that the Dutch did on Friday night and it would probably be fair to say that without him, the Germans would have picked up all three points and put a huge dent in Koeman’s qualification hopes. Marsh’s praise for Wijnaldum is massive. As he says, he never usually says that a player had put in a display worthy of a 10/10 but he’s bucked that trend to the Liverpool midfielder. Hopefully we can see Wijnaldum carry this form into club football after the international break is over. Liverpool play Newcastle next weekend before kicking off their Champions League campaign with a clash against Napoli, followed up by a trip to Stamford Bridge to face off against Chelsea. Wijnaldum’s form could be key in those matches.
