Alan Shearer has named Liverpool duo Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Both players were instrumental in the Reds’ 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, with Mane bagging a brace and Firmino registering two assists.

The result also meant that Jurgen Klopp’s men maintained their 100% record in the Premier League so far this term, and moved five points clear of Manchester City, who suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at the hands of Norwich City.

Shearer announced his team through the Premier League’s official Twitter account.

OPINION

Credit where it’s due, Mane and Firmino were sublime on Saturday, but do we really expect anything else from them at this stage? Alongside Mo Salah, they have formed one of the most impressive and fearsome strike forces in world football, and it is never really a shock to see them ripping sides limb from limb. Of the three, it is perhaps Firmino who slips under the radar a little, but his contribution to this side is phenomenal. Already this term he has two goals and three assist in five appearances, averaging 3.8 shots, 2.6 successful dribbles, and 1.4 key passes per match, as per Whoscored. He is a massive creative live wire, and if he continues to mine the rich vein of form that he has stumbled across in recent times, then there is no reason why he cannot have his finest season to date in a red shirt this time around. Having Mane and Salah alongside him will no doubt help his cause, but the Brazilian deserves a bit of love too.
