Virgil Van Dijk has denied claims that he is in negotiations over a new contract with Liverpool.

The Dutch defender had been linked with a bumper new deal that would have supposedly doubled his wages at Anfield, as per 90Min, the player himself has sought clarify his current situation.

Speaking to Sky Sports, as quoted by reliable journalist Dave O’Connell, he said: “I saw some reports in the media that I was agreeing a new deal and stuff.

“But I’m not even discussing anything at the moment.

“The only thing I want to do right now is focus on the games and we’ll see in the future what may happen.”

OPINION

This is probably not what Liverpool fans will have wanted to hear, truth be told, but it is no real reason for concern. Van Dijk may not be discussing a new deal, but that doesn’t mean that he is going anywhere, or that he won’t be open to putting pen to paper further down that line. At the end of the day, he joined the club less than two years ago, and while his profile has skyrocketed in that time, it’s hard to think of any place where he would be better off than Anfield. The 28-year-old made an uncharacteristic mistake in the 2-0 defeat to Napoli on Tuesday night, but that blunder aside, he has been in sublime form this season, averaging 4.2 clearances and 5.4 aerial duels won per match, as per Whoscored. He is imperious, and even after this latest update, he isn’t going anywhere.
