Sol Campbell has claimed that Arsenal need a player like Liverpool midfielder James Milner in the middle of the pitch.

The former Gunners’ enforcer claims his old side are lacking strength in midfield and picked out players such as Milner and Ray Parlour.

Milner has only started one game this season, with three of his four appearances coming off the bench for Jurgen Klopp’s side, after making 43 outings in all competitions last season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Campbell picked the £140,000-a-week Premier League veteran [Spotrac] because of his desire, admitting he believes Arsenal’s midfield is their major problem, not their defence.

“You look at someone like Milner, the attitude. The Ray Parlour attitude,” he said.

“That’s the kind of attitude that Arsenal need. The love of football and desire to keep going, I think they’re lacking that.”

“I look at Milner and think we need a little bit of that at Arsenal.”

OPINION

The 33-year-old Reds’ midfielder has been the ultimate professional in the heart of midfield and continues to prove his worth at Anfield every single season. Milner is an integral part of Liverpool’s plans this season whether starting or on the bench, and his experience will be vital if the Reds are to win their first-ever Premier League title. Arsenal currently have Granit Xhaka at the base of their midfield, and the Switzerland international is quickly becoming a liability for the Gunners, with Milner much more reliable in the middle of the park. Xhaka commits way too many fouls, averaging 2.8 per game according to WhoScored, and Milner is much more disciplined – an attribute that is vital in any side. Arsenal have the tendency to fold over and be easily beaten like in their draw with Watford where they lost a two-goal lead on Sunday – with the experience of Milner surely something that would have helped them.
