OPINION

The summer was somewhat surrounded by controversy at Liverpool regarding the career of young forward Bobby Duncan.

Duncan’s agent, Saif Rubie, created a storm online by releasing a statement on his now-deleted personal Twitter account accusing the Reds of mentally bullying the 18-year-old by blocking an exit from Anfield.

The former Manchester City striker was reported by the Daily Mail to be wanting permission to leave the club permanently after concerns surrounding opportunities in the senior squad.

All Duncan had to do was remain patient, and he surely couldn’t have expected to force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans after only one season with the under-18s, with the under-23s the next stepping stone to earning that.

The England youth international eventually sealed a move to Italian side Fiorentina at the end of the European transfer window, putting an end to his short stint in Merseyside.

Duncan surely agreed to the move expecting to involved in the Serie A this season and looking to stamp his authority on senior football.

The opposite of that has happened, and the forward has been placed in Fiorentina’s under-19s squad – opening his account by scoring twice over the weekend against Bologna in a 6-3 victory.

Duncan highlighted his talent in the game, scoring a header from a corner and also smartly dispatching a second-half penalty.

All that the game proved, in the end, was that the grass isn’t greener on the other side even after securing a move, with Duncan destined for the Italian side’s academy.

The highly-rated forward is instead doing exactly what he would have been doing at Liverpool, scoring goals for the club’s youth side, but instead, he could have been doing it in the under-23s in the Premier League Two.

With Duncan not being fast-tracked into the first team, he could be left wondering whether or not he made the right decision to quit the club.
