Harvey Elliott is expected to make his European debut for Liverpool on Tuesday afternoon for the under-19’s against Napoli, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The 16-year-old is set to miss out on a spot on the bench in the Champions League clash against the Italians for the senior side, but instead make his UEFA Youth League debut.

The highly-rated midfielder who arrived from Fulham in the summer was pictured in first-team training on Monday, as the Reds live-streamed a session onto their official Twitter account.

Barry Lewtas is expected to name a number of notable players in his starting line-up for the clash against the side his youngsters drew against last season.

OPINION

Given the magnitude of the game facing Liverpool in their Champions League opener against Napoli, it would be a smart decision for Jurgen Klopp to stick with experience. Elliott was given the opportunity in pre-season against the Italian side, and certainly impressed in his second half-cameo, but the difference between a friendly and the Champions League is massive and the young midfielder will know that. Klopp will be determined to not see a repeat of the thrashing his side received that day in Scotland, and selecting much more experienced players will help his cause. Liverpool signed the highly-rated teenager, who is the Premier League’s youngest-ever debutant [BBC] in the summer and he will get his first taste of European action in the UEFA Youth League. That is something that will benefit him much more as he will be almost guaranteed game time instead of sitting on the bench for the full game in the senior side. Elliott must use the opportunity to show he won’t be phased by the big occasion, and prove that he can potentially make the step up to the Champions League this season.
