OPINION
You have to feel sorry for Dejan Lovren in some respects. It was only last summer that he was playing in a World Cup final, after having featured for Liverpool in their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid only weeks prior. Now, however, he can’t get a look in at Anfield, and finds himself behind Joe Gomez and Joel Matip in the race to be Virgil Van Dijk’s permanent defensive partner. And things aren’t going much better for him on the international scene either. The 30-year-old was largely culpable for Azerbaijan’s goal in their wholly unexpected 1-1 draw with Croatia in Euro 2020 qualifying on Monday evening, and Liverpool fans were quick to call him out for it. Not for the first time, Lovren’s concentration levels were found wanting, and ultimately, it cost his side two points. Over the course of his 152 Premier League appearances, Lovren has made six errors that have led directly to goals, as per the Premier League themselves. That may not sound like a lot, but as a point of reference, in 123 Premier League matches, Virgil Van Dijk has made just one [Premier League]. In short, Lovren is a liability, and he proved it once again with another howler on Monday.

Dejan Lovren defends horrifically, and then turns and shouts at everyone else. Standard
