Dejan Lovren has called Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson the best full-backs in the world.

The Croatian international posted a picture on his personal Instagram account after the Reds’ defensive duo missed out on places in FIFA’s Best Men’s XI on Monday evening.

“The BEST LB and RB in the [world],” he wrote.

It was revealed that Robertson made the second XI based on votes alongside Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, whereas Alexander-Arnold had to settle for a place in the third XI [BT Sport].

The Liverpool defensive partnership flourished in last season’s Premier League, combining for a total of 23 assists as the Reds scored 89 goals as well as having the best defence in the division.

OPINION

It is hard to argue against Lovren’s claim that Robertson and Alexander-Arnold are the best full-backs in the world right now. The Reds’ duo have been simply irresistible in both the Premier League and the Champions League and have helped Jurgen Klopp’s side onto another level. The fact that Marcelo and Sergio Ramos made FIFA’s Best XI is simply ludicrous given their average year compared to the Liverpool defensive duo. The Real Madrid defenders were involved in 18 defeats as they were comfortably beaten to the title by Barcelona in La Liga by 19 points in a season where they also conceded 71 goals. The Reds only lost one game in the Premier League, and both Robertson and Alexander-Arnold were two of the main reasons behind that success. To only have two Liverpool players in the best squad in the year that they won their sixth Champions League doesn’t seem fair, and Lovren is clearly behind his defensive teammates after the awards on Monday.
