Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount could feature against Liverpool after leaving the field injured in Tuesday night’s Champions League defeat to Valencia, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claim on their website that the England international has not given up on facing the Reds at Stamford Bridge on Sunday despite a reckless challenge from Francis Coquelin.

The Daily Star reports that Chelsea initially feared serious ankle ligament damage to their 20-year-old midfield star, but a scan revealed that he only suffered a sprained ankle.

That gives the £75,000-a-week midfielder [Spotrac] every chance of featuring in the game after beginning rehabilitation on the setback the day after the Champions League defeat.

OPINION

Jurgen Klopp would have been happy if Mount was not fit enough to feature against his Liverpool side, especially after the effect the 20-year-old has had on the Blues at the beginning of the campaign. The England international has quickly become a key part of Chelsea’s plans in the heart of midfield, starting all five games in the Premier League, and scoring three goals in the process. Mount has picked up where he left off from the loan spell at Derby County last season, where he linked up perfectly with Reds’ youngster Harry Wilson. Currently averaging an impressive 3.2 shots per game and 2.2 key passes according to WhoScored, the young playmaker could cause Liverpool serious problems, something they would have been relieved to not come up against at Stamford Bridge. Mount is currently the Blues’ second-top scorer and his lung-busting runs to support Tammy Abraham have become a real feature in his game, and something that could have troubled Fabinho, who is more settled in a holding role where he doesn’t have to track many players. Klopp will have his fingers crossed over the fitness of Mount, who has become a real key figure under Lampard this season.
