Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson was missing from training ahead of the Reds’ Champions League clash with Napoli.

The Monday training session was live-streamed on Liverpool’s official Twitter account, with all the senior squad present apart from Robertson and Divock Origi.

Robertson completed the full 90 minutes of the Reds’ 3-1 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday and appeared to leave the field with no clear problems at the final whistle.

The £50,000-a-week defender [Spotrac] has been ever-present for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season in the Premier League, with the Reds lacking senior back-up for the left-back spot as youth player Yasser Larouci was given the chance to impress during pre-season.

OPINION

Robertson would be a massive miss for the game against Napoli, as Liverpool look to avenge their defeat against the Italian side from the same stage of the competition last season. The 25-year-old has been phenomenal in all competitions in the past year and played a major role in the Reds picking up their sixth Champions League trophy in the last campaign. Robertson is known for his attacking strength in the side, delivering his first assist of the season against Newcastle, but he has also averaged 1.4 tackles and 1.8 interceptions according to WhoScored, with his defensive capabilities vitally important in games with this magnitude. Should the Scottish international miss the game against Napoli, Klopp would most likely move James Milner from midfield into the defence in a makeshift role. Liverpool’s full-backs are so important to their system that as soon as one of them drop out, Klopp’s side suffers slightly, and Reds’ fans will be hoping that his absence is more of a precaution ahead of the game.
