You will struggle to find a better left-back in Europe than Andy Robertson. The Liverpool defender is world class talent on his day, capable of silencing the trickiest of wingers, and of going at it hammer and tongs on the front foot as well. This season he has averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, and 1.3 clearances per game in a red shirt, while also making 1.3 key passes and having 1.5 shots on goal per match too, as per Whoscored. So you can’t help wondering why he has struggled so badly for his national team in recent times. Scotland were on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat from Belgium on Monday evening, and the general consensus was that Robertson was largely to blame for the opening two goals. In both cases, the 25-year-old was caught in two minds as he dallied over whether to close down his man or not, and in both instances, he was made to pay the price. He was hardly blameless in for the third either, giving away the corner that Toby Alderweireld nodded home from. It was a night to forget for the Scottish captain, but a few more performances like this one, and he could be out on his ear, armband or not, with Kieran Tierney waiting in the wings.
