Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has revealed that it was former West Ham teammate Aaron Cresswell who helped him to make contact with the Reds over the summer.

The Spaniard left east London for Anfield on a free transfer, but the stopper has the full-back to thank for giving John Achterberg, goalkeeping coach on Merseyside, Adrian’s phone number.

A piece from the Telegraph in which the 32-year-old was interviewed reads: “Adrian owes a debt to his former West Ham team-mate Aaron Cresswell.

“It was the full-back who gave Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach John Achterberg – who knew Cresswell from their days together at Tranmere Rovers – a glowing recommendation and Adrian’s mobile number when it looked like Mignolet was going.

“‘I didn’t know that at the time but after I signed he told me,” he says. “So thank you, ‘Cress’, because he had a good word for me!'”

OPINION

Liverpool owe a pretty big debt to Cresswell by the sounds of it. Nobody could have foreseen the manner in which Adrian has been thrust into the limelight at Anfield, but throughout the course of Alisson’s spell on the sidelines, he has been wonderful. As reported by the Telegraph, the Spaniard has the best minutes per goal conceded record in the Premier League this season, only letting one past him every 114 minutes. The next closest on that list are Kasper Schmeichel and Dean Henderson at 103 minutes each. With Alisson nearing the end of his comeback trail, you would expect him to retake his place between the sticks, but based on what we’ve seen this term, that would be harsh on Adrian.
