Peter Crouch has slammed midfielder Fabinho for what he claims was a sloppy performance in Liverpool’s 4-3 win against Red Bull Salzburg at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Liverpool let slip of a three-goal lead they built up in the first half before Mohamed Salah rescued the three points late on for the Reds to earn their first win of this season’s Champions League campaign.

Salzburg clawed their way back into the game off the back of some poor play by Jurgen Klopp’s men and Crouch has highlighted Fabinho as someone who he believes really struggled on the ball against the Austrian champions.

“Liverpool were a little bit nervy, you have to say,” Crouch said on BT Sport 3 after the match on Wednesday night.

“Fabinho is normally so calm on the ball but was passing it out of play, they weren’t as intricate as they were in the first half so it definitely affected them but that fourth goal killed them off.”

OPINION

Fabinho has been one of the best players Liverpool have had this season but Crouch is certainly right to suggest that the former Monaco midfielder struggled in possession on Wednesday night. According to stats by WhoScored, Fabinho completed 81 per cent of his passes against Salzburg. When he has been in the starting line-up, Fabinho’s pass accuracy has not been that low since the win against Norwich on the opening day of the Premier League season. Even in the defeat against Napoli in the last Champions League group stage match, the Brazilian managed to complete 95.4 per cent of his passes, so it is clear that his passing abilities were not as they should have been against Salzburg. Fabinho may be in need of a rest. He has played a lot of football so far this season so it will be interesting to see whether or not Klopp drops him to the bench on Saturday for the clash against Leicester.
