The clock is ticking for Liverpool’s on-loan star Marko Grujic’s career with the club, according to journalist Paul Gorst.

The 23-year-old, Jurgen Klopp’s first signing for the Reds, is currently in his second year out on loan at Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin, and Gorst doesn’t believe he is destined for the Liverpool first team.

“For Grujic, the clock is ticking on his Reds career, I feel,” he wrote during a Liverpool Echo Q & A [23/10; 12:58]. “He signed in January 2016 and has only made 14 senior appearances.

“He made that during a half-season spell at Cardiff. Liverpool will assess both [Grujic and Harry Wilson] in the summer.”

OPINION

This seems rather concerning for the Liverpool supporters. They have been clamouring for Grujic to get some first team experience for the Reds at some point in the future having watched him perform exceptionally well in Germany over the past season or so. The youngster has been terrific for Hertha and so it’s slightly surprising to hear Gorst say that he thinks the clock is ticking on his career at Anfield. It was only a little over a year ago that the club handed the Serbian international a new contract before his first campaign out in Germany. Would they have really changed their mind on him over the past year, a year where he has performed wonderfully well in the Bundesliga. As per WhoScored.com, Grujic is averaging 44 passes per game this season with a success rate of 81.3%, while he averages 1.9 shots and 1.5 dribbles per outing, with two league goals scored. However, he also manages 1.1 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per game. Clearly he is a midfielder who can do a bit of everything, so why would the clock be ticking for him on Merseyside? Let’s hope that’s not the case.
