Liverpool are in the hunt to sign Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to Sky Sports in Germany.

The broadcaster claims that Arsenal and Manchester United are also interested in signing the 22-year-old, but Jurgen Klopp is someone who has been hot on the heels of the Switzerland international for some time.

It is understood that Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have been in pursuit of Zakaria, who could cost £43million for whoever is willing to sign him from Gladbach in the near future.

OPINION

Zakaria is a powerhouse of a defensive midfielder. The 6ft 3 [transfermarkt] ace has made 13 appearances across all competitions for Monchengladbach this season, scoring two goals in the process. According to stats by WhoScored, he has averaged 2.6 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per league game this term while also impressing on the ball by averaging 2.2 dribbles and one shot. In comparison to Liverpool’s Fabinho, who plays in the same position as Zakaria, the Brazilian has averaged 3.7 tackles and 1.7 interceptions. However Liverpool’s midfield enforcer has averaged 1.3 dribbles and one shot per league game. It shows that Fabinho is more reliable in a defensive manner compared to Zakaria, but the Swiss international is perhaps a bit better on the ball. Zakaria is also three years younger than Fabinho so could be a good back-up option for Fabinho in the future.
