If there was one thing that Liverpool fans could have asked for on the last Friday of an October international break, you can bet that many of them would have wanted a contract extension for defender Joel Matip. Out of nowhere, their prayers have been answered. The Cameroonian put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2024, as per the club themselves, and it’s fair to say that Kopites everywhere are delighted. It’s not hard to see why. So far this term, the 28-year-old has averaged 5.2 clearances per game, as well as 1.8 tackles and 1.7 interceptions, as per Whoscored. He has also registered a match rating of 7.62, making him the sixth highest rated player in the Premier League this term, and the second highest Liverpool player after Roberto Firmino. In short, he has been superb, and this is exactly the kind of pick me up that many fans will have needed after the lull of an international break. The only way things could get better is if Matip bags the winner at Old Trafford on Sunday, but honestly, with the way he’s playing, you can’t rule that out either. What a way to start the weekend.
