Liverpool centre back Dejan Lovren is set to start against Arsenal on Wednesday despite playing the full 90 minutes against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that the Croatian international is very likely to continue at the heart of the defence in the Carabao Cup clash, with Joel Matip still out injured.

With superstar centre half Virgil van Dijk almost certain to be rested, it’s looking like Lovren will partner youngster Joe Gomez against Unai Emery’s embattled side.

However, summer signing Sepp van den Berg sat out the Under-23s’ game at the weekend and so could be in line to make an appearance at Anfield.

OPINION

Matip’s injury is obviously a big blow for Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, and it means that Lovren will surely continue alongside Gomez at centre back on Wednesday. That’s unless Klopp decides to fully go with youth and throw Van Den Berg in there alongside the England international. However, it certainly seems likely that Lovren and Gomez will line up together against Arsenal. The good thing is that the former Southampton man hasn’t played much football this season and so he should be fit enough to play two games in four days. It will be interesting to see Klopp’s team selection on Wednesday, because he made wholesale changes against Milton Keynes Dons in the last round and will surely do the same here. The likes of Adrian, Adam Lallana, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Divock Origi and Rhian Brewster will likely all feature in some capacity. That would still be a pretty strong Liverpool line up, and so they should stand a decent chance against the Reds.
