Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has admitted he’s been blown away by the incredible rise of Liverpool left back Andrew Robertson.

The 25-year-old has become a key player for the Reds, as well as captain of his country, despite starting off his career in the lower leagues of Scottish football.

McLeish has been very impressed: “It’s an amazing story. He’s made an amazing leap from Dundee United to Hull to Liverpool,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“It’s outstanding. He’s definitely an inspiration for young players that want to be Scottish footballers. Andy is a guy who should inspire every young Scottish footballer to want to play football and reach the top because he’s been rejected a couple of times and never given up. ”

OPINION

There’s no doubt that Robertson is a testament to what can happen in football when you show determination, resolve and never take no for an answer. He was never meant to become a top level footballer, but he has worked incredibly hard and made the most of every opportunity he’s been given. Even when he was at Hull City he was seen as a decent player, but certainly not a world beater. When Liverpool signed him he was viewed as a squad player at best, and Jurgen Klopp didn’t allow him to become the starter ahead of Alberto Moreno until mid-way through his debut season at Anfield. All he’s done since becoming the undisputed starter, though, is establish himself as arguably the finest left back in world football. Yes, he’s had trouble translating that form to the international stage, but he’s playing in a woeful Scotland team. Give him a break, for goodness sake.
