Rangers should revive their hunt to sign Herbie Kane in January after it was reported that Liverpool are ready to sell the midfielder when the transfer window re-opens in the winter.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool have reservations about whether Kane, 20, has the ability to step up and play for their first-team on a regular basis so are now willing to listen to offers in January.

That could be music to the ears of Rangers manager Steven Gerrard after it was reported in the summer that he had tried to lure the central midfielder to Ibrox on loan.

Football Insider claimed in July that the Light Blues had made an approach to sign Kane on loan as Gerrard looked to take advantage of his connections at the Merseyside club.

Clearly a deal failed to materialise and Kane was not loaned out for a second season in a row, despite impressing during his temporary spell at Doncaster Rovers last term when he scored seven goals and supplied 10 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.

Kane has remained at Liverpool and while he has been chiefly used in the Under-23s, Jurgen Klopp did hand him his first-team debut for the European champions when he came off the bench against MK Dons in the Carabao Cup last month.

Rangers might not need a new central midfielder adding to their squad right now but as Kane is only 20-years-old, he could be seen as one for the future and one that Gerrard can take under his wing and nurture.

It could also be a good idea to sign up Kane and instantly send him out on loan somewhere so that he can get first-team football and continue his development in the men’s game.

It would be a shame for the Gers to miss out on a player that they wanted in the summer simply because Gerrard has good numbers in his position so if the ex-Liverpool man was going to raid his former club for Kane, he should try and do it in January when the price may be low.
