Former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise has questioned Marcus Rashford’s assertion that Manchester United did enough to beat the Reds on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men had to rely on a late Adam Lallana strike to earn a point and continue their unbeaten start to the season, but speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Rashford, who scored United’s opener, claimed that the league leaders didn’t deserve the draw.

Responding to those comments, Riise wrote on his personal Twitter account: “Really???”, followed by a pair of surprised faces.

OPINION

You can forgive Riise for his surprise at this one. Liverpool might not have been at their best yesterday, but to go as far as to suggest that they didn’t deserve a point seems a little harsh, even from an opposition player. For one thing, if refereeing decisions and VAR controversies had gone in a different direction, the Reds could well have been 1-0 up at half time, rather than 1-0 down. On a more detailed examination, we can see that Liverpool had 68% possession to United’s 32%, 10 shots to United’s seven, and four shots on target to United’s two, as per the BBC. In fact, you could probably argue that the very least Liverpool deserved was a point.
