Phil Thompson has quashed the suggestion that Liverpool already have the Premier League title in the bag after moving eight points clear at the top of the table before the international break.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won all eight of their league fixtures so far while Manchester City’s defeat to Wolves earlier this month leaves Pep Guardiola’s side with a big points deficit to overturn if they want to win a third title in a row.

It has led to Liverpool becoming widely-seen as favourites to win their first-ever Premier League crown and while Thompson will no doubt want to see his former club finish top of the pile, he claims that Liverpool supporters are remaining grounded amid the excitement.

“It seems to be every other football fan of every other team that think it is over. Only Liverpool fans are playing this down,” Thompson told Sporting Life.

“Only eight games have been played, with a long way to go yet. I do not see why the majority of football fans think it is over.

“It is absolutely ridiculous to think that, with 30 games to go, the title race can be over!

“I don’t care how good Liverpool are, and I’ll be perfectly honest, I don’t think they have hit third gear yet.

“We have seen how great Manchester City have been and they have had a blip, but that could easily happen to Liverpool, even without any injuries.

“The injuries have affected Manchester City, but we could have injuries that disrupt how we play too, so there are so many differing issues which can affect the season, and people are not taking that into consideration.”

OPINION

Thompson is right. All it takes is for Liverpool to lose a couple of matches and Man City to win a couple and the gap is back down to two points. That could even happen in the next couple of weeks and who is going to be saying that the title race is decided after 10 games are played and there’s a two-point gap? Nobody in their right minds would. So there’s no point in saying that Liverpool will win the title. Yes, they are favourites and there is a good reason for that. At the moment, Klopp’s side have a perfect record while everyone else in the top-flight has been far from perfect. Man City have had injuries, as Thompson points out, but they still have a squad that should be able to avoid defeat against teams like Wolves and new boys Norwich. It does feel like it could be Liverpool’s year at this point in the season. If they are top by the time February comes around with a similar points gap, that is when people can be more definitive.
