Liverpool’s top four rivals Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing reported Reds’ transfer target David Neres, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian outlet claims that Mauricio Pochettino’s side are keen on stealing the 22-year-old from under the noses of the European champions.

The same publication reported last month that Jurgen Klopp’s side are also in for the Ajax winger, who played a key role in the Dutch side’s run to last season’s Champions League semi-finals.

However, the youngster is said to have a contract in Amsterdam until 2023.

OPINION

We all know how talented Neres is. He was one of the stars of what was a sensational season for Ajax last time out. Although the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong got big European moves this summer, nobody was able to snare the Brazilian, who has now amassed seven caps for his country. It’s been a fairly quiet start to the new campaign for him, though, with just two goals in 14 games in all competitions thus far [Source: Transfermarkt]. The problem with this potential move to Anfield is that he’s not really going to get a game ahead of the Reds’ current front three unless Klopp alters his tactics somewhat. The statistics show that Neres is not yet on the level of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. As per WhoScored.com, the only offensive statistical category where he leads the Liverpool trio this season is in having the fewest number of unsuccessful touches. He has fewer shots and produces less key passes per game, while his average WhoScored rating per outing is the fewest of the quartet. Perhaps, then, it’s best to let Spurs have their way on this occasion.
