Gary Neville has claimed that the atmosphere at Old Trafford on Sunday caused Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson to fold in his side’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Robertson has been in superb form for Liverpool but was one of many players in Jurgen Klopp’s squad to struggle this weekend as the Reds’ 100 per cent record was broken by their most bitter of rivals.

While commentating on the game, Neville suggested that the atmosphere at Old Trafford was one of the reasons that Liverpool stars failed to perform to their best.

“You mentioned before the Liverpool mentality around coming to Old Trafford, can you just explain that? Because you see Robertson, the noise was building in the crowd and he looked like he folded and just kicked it out of play,” Neville said during Sky Sports Main Event’s live coverage on Sunday [05:43pm].

“He’s been outstanding for Liverpool for the last 18 months.”

OPINION

Robertson was not the only Liverpool player to play badly against Man United and while the atmosphere might have had an impact on the way they played, it would be simplistic to say that is the only reason why. Liverpool were without Mohamed Salah and have been a bit unlucky with the VAR decision. Complacency could have also been an issue, especially as almost everyone was tipping Man United to lose this match due to their poor form in all competitions. Although Adam Lallana grabbed an equaliser, there’s no getting away from the fact that Liverpool have not looked themselves for a few weeks now. They struggled versus Sheffield United, Red Bull Salzburg and Leicester before the international break and in the long-run, earning a point at Old Trafford, under the circumstances, might not be the worst result in the world. At least they did not lose. That’s the main thing.
