Harvey Elliott is expected to start for Liverpool in their Carabao Cup clash against Arsenal on Wednesday night, according to Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Doyle.

The reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account on Sunday that Elliott, 16, was involved in the Liverpool first-team squad when they warmed up against Tottenham at Anfield and while he was not in Jurgen Klopp’s matchday squad at the weekend, he should be in the coming days.

Elliott played 90 minutes of the 2-0 win against MK Dons in the previous round of the Carabao Cup and now it seems as though his strong performance in that match – and for the Reds’ youth sides – will see him rewarded with a start versus the Gunners.

OPINION

Elliott has been very impressive since Liverpool signed him from Fulham in the summer. Although he has been in trouble for his off-field antics in relation to Harry Kane, there is no doubting about his quality on it and the potential that he is showing. In three UEFA Youth League appearances, he has assisted goals while also scoring in the EFL Trophy and supplying two further assists in Premier League for the Liverpool Under-23s side. Elliott was one of the best players on the pitch against MK Dons in the last round of the Carabao Cup so he definitely deserves a spot in the starting line-up against Arsenal. It remains to be seen what kind of side Unai Emery puts out as the Gunners are in poor form at the minute, but either way, it should be a huge experience for Elliott. It is mad to think that he only celebrated his 16th birthday in April and could be set to start against Arsenal on Wednesday.
