Chris Kirkland believes that Liverpool will win the Premier League title already after Manchester City’s poor start to the season.

The former Reds stopper claimed that Pep Guardiola’s side has massive problems in defence after losing Vincent Kompany on top of the long-term injury picked up by Aymeric Laporte earlier in the season.

Kirkland went on to say that if Liverpool beat City later in the campaign, their gap could quickly open up into double figures, something that will benefit them as he can’t see Jurgen Klopp’s side losing four or five games this term.

“I honestly do think it is,” he responded when asked if the title is on its way to Anfield by Sky Sports.

“I think with City’s injury problems they’ve got at the back, [Aymeric] Laporte is a huge miss, Vincent Kompany is a massive miss for them. At the back you can get at them.”

“When we play them, if we can take points off them then all of a sudden you’re talking double figures. Can you see us losing four or five games this season? Not the way we’re playing.”

OPINION

Kirkland is spot on with his verdict, the Premier League title is already in Liverpool’s hands and they must not let it slip away. The way they have started is a testament to Klopp’s style, given the fact that the German has helped his side pick up exactly where they left off last season. Liverpool couldn’t have got off to a more perfect start in this campaign, winning their opening eight games and extending their gap to City to eight points. Given the fact that the Reds only lost once last season, all of the signs look positive for them, especially given the defensive fragilities of Guardiola’s side in the opening two months of the season. Liverpool can’t stop here though, and they must keep pushing as if they are chasing someone down, with their first-ever Premier League title on the line. Should Liverpool avoid serious long-term injuries like City have picked up, then it is hard to see any way back for their nearest challengers.
