Danny Mills has questioned the creativity in Liverpool’s midfield of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, and Georginio Wijnaldum.
The Sky Sports pundit doubted whether or not the Reds’ midfield trio can score or create enough goals for Jurgen Klopp’s side throughout the season.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Football Centre (02/10 11:26 am), Mills singled out the Dutch international as the only player likely to contribute in the goal tally for Klopp’s side.
“That three as it stands at the moment, with Henderson, Fabinho, and Wijnaldum, is there enough creativity in that?” he said.
“Is there enough goals in that? Wijnaldum might get a few, we’ve seen that.”
“Henderson I don’t think is gonna score too many.”
“Fabinho is not gonna score too many, and also, they’re not going to create.”
Wijnaldum scored the all-important winner in Saturday’s 1-0 win against Sheffield United as they extended their Premier League winning streak to 16 games.
OPINION
It seems harsh to question the creativity of the Liverpool midfield given the fact they have one of the most free-scoring attacks in the world. Both Henderson and Fabinho are not in the team to create chances and score goals for the Reds but are actually in the heart of the side to provide cover and recycle possession so that their more attacking teammates can take over. Should either of Trent Alexander-Arnold or Andrew Robertson bomb forward from full-back, which they do so efficiently, it is the role of the Reds’ holding midfielders to step in and make sure that their side are not overrun on the counter-attack, something that they do so perfectly. Each player has their role under Klopp, and the German will have specific jobs for his midfielders, and if he required them to be an extra creative spark, they most likely would be, but they are simply not required to do so.
