OPINION

Once upon a time, not too long ago, the prospect of a Sunday afternoon trip to Old Trafford would have had many Liverpool fans quaking in their boots.

At the end of the day, love them or loathe them, you have to acknowledge just how good Manchester United have been in the realms of modern British footballing history.

In the immediate past, however, they have looked entirely toothless, and as a result, many Kopites will be rubbing their hands with a glee at the thought of an easy three points against a United side who are languishing in 12th in the Premier League table.

To be fair, you can understand why. Aside from that lowly league standing, United have also won just twice in the top flight this term, scoring a fairly underwhelming nine goals in the process – four of which came in their opening fixture against Chelsea.

None of that matters to Paul Scholes though, because the ex-United man has suggested that his former side have what it takes to get something out of Sunday’s clash.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, asked if he can see United hurting Liverpool, he said: “Yeah I can.

“I know it’s difficult to see where United’s goals are coming from. It’ll probably have to be a bit of individual brilliance because the creativity of the team isn’t really there, especially without [Paul] Pogba playing.

“[Marcus] Rashford is capable of it, Dan James is capable of it. Maybe a set-piece, and Harry Maguire could be capable of it.”

In fairness to Scholes, he is never going to turn around and openly admit that Liverpool are a much better side than United these days, but honestly, this just sounds like he is clutching at straws.

Marcus Rashford and Dan James do have goals in them, yes, with three each so far this term, but United’s next highest scorer who is actually fit enough to play on Sunday is Scott McTominay, and he has just the one, as per the Premier League.

An individual moment of brilliance might happen, of course, as might a Liverpool howler, but if you’re going into a match relying on those kind of things to dig you out of a hole, then you’ve pretty much already lost, surely.
