Jamie Carragher has taken to Twitter to hail three key Liverpool players after the Reds opened up an eight point lead at the top of the Premier League table with a 3-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men took all the spoils in a controversial match at Anfield, and Carragher was quick to praise Fabinho, as well as defensive partnership Virgil Van Dijk and Dejan Lovren.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “Huge 3 points for LFC today & 9 points is a huge lead at this early stage.

“I thought Man City played very well with the ball, but they just couldn’t cope defensively.

“Fabinho & the centre-backs were immense for Liverpool.”

OPINION

Lots will be written and said about Van Dijk and Fabinho, who are arguably two of the most gifted defensively-minded players in world football right now, but it’s fantastic to see Lovren outing in such an impressive shift at the moment too. This was arguably his least commanding performance since returning to the starting XI, and yet he still managed five clearances, two blocks, a tackle, and an interception, as per Whoscored. There has never been any doubt that the Croatian is a talented player, but there have perhaps been questions over his level of consistency in the past. Now, however, it looks as if he is a much more reliable asset to Klopp’s men. With Joel Matip also impressing this season, and with Joe Gomez also waiting in the wings to stake a claim for a long term spot in his manager’s plans, things are looking good for the Reds.
