Roberto Firmino has paid tribute to Georginio Wijnaldum after the Liverpool midfielder scored a hat-trick in the Netherlands’ 5-0 demolition of Estonia in Amsterdam on Tuesday night.

Nathan Ake and Myron Boadu were also on the scoresheet as Wijnaldum, 29, captained the Dutch side to a big victory to round of their successful Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

After the match, the former Newcastle midfielder took to his personal Instagram account to show how thrilled he was to have not only scored a hat-trick but to also captain his country.

Firmino was among those to reply to Wijnaldum in the comments, with the Brazil international saying: “What a player.”

OPINION

Wijnaldum has been on fire for the Netherlands in their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign. The Liverpool midfielder is not exactly known for his goalscoring abilities with just two goals in 18 appearances across all competitions for his club this season. However the 29-year-old has been a different beast for Holland, netting six goals in Euro 2020 qualifying. Wijnaldum’s display in the 4-2 win against Germany in September was arguably the highlight of his qualifying campaign but to finish things off with a hat-trick – even if it was just against Estonia – is still special for the Dutchman. Wijnaldum is not someone who is widely adored by Liverpool fans and there are sections of the fanbase who seem to make a scapegoat out of the ex-Newcastle man when things are not going smoothly. But after his last few performances for club and country, it seems as though Jurgen Klopp has one of the most in-form midfielders in Europe in his squad.
