Chris Kamara has expressed his frustration at the decision to rule out Roberto Firmino’s goal against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Liverpool forward had the ball in the back of the net while his side were still behind in their eventual 2-1 win, but it was chalked off after a contentious call that he was marginally offside.

And speaking on Goals On Sunday (Sky Sports Premier League, 11.30am, Sunday November 3rd), he was quick to voice his view of the decision.

He said: “I’m not happy with it, I’ll be 100% honest.

“In my opinion, this is made up. This is made up by somebody at Stockley Park who have decided that they don’t want this to be a goal. That is my honest opinion.

“Firmino is onside. Somebody has decided to do that, and I think they should be outed.”

OPINION

These are strong, strong words from Kamara, but it’s hard to disagree with his sentiment. At the end of the day, it looks as if Firmino is onside, and even with the lines drawn on from VAR, it seems as if there is a certain amount of straw clutching going on. It feels, at the moment, as if the biggest issue that VAR has is a lack of clarity, and as with most things, you can’t help feeling that this could be improved by cutting out the middle man. If a player is five yards offside, let the video ref call it through the ear piece. If, however, there is even the slightest shadow of a doubt, why not get the referee over to review the incident himself on a pitch side monitor? It would increase consistency, and lead to a much more transparent system. At the moment, the technology is not broken, but the people who are using aren’t implementing it correctly.
