Gary Lineker gushed about Liverpool midfielder Fabinho and suggested the Brazilian had arguably been the Reds’ best player this season.

The BT Sport host stated that Fabinho was a terrific footballer and pointed out that the 26-year-old was capable of doing a job for Jurgen Klopp’s side in midfield or in defence.

“Fabinho, whether he is in midfield or at the back on occasions when he’s needed, he is a terrific footballer, arguably their best player this season,” said Lineker in a clip uploaded to BT Sport’s Twitter account.

Fabinho has played 19 times this season for the Reds across all competitions and has racked up one goal as well as registered two assists in the process.

OPINION

Did Lineker jinx Fabinho? After all the presenter said the remarks ahead of Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Napoli and during that match, the unthinkable happened as the powerful midfielder went down injured. The 26-year-old managed to play only 19 minutes of Wednesday’s game before injury struck, and perhaps if he had stayed on the pitch, Klopp’s team may have got the win or at the very least submitted a better performance. The Reds boss did provide an update on Fabinho’s injury after the game, but it wasn’t exactly comforting as all he could share is that he was hoping it wasn’t a serious injury (Source: Official Liverpool website). It would be a shame if Fabinho had to miss a number of games, and it would be a big blow, as the midfield enforcer has wowed this season. The Brazilian has been a defensive rock across his 12 Premier League outings as he has averaged 2.5 tackles per game or 1.3 interceptions per game (Source: WhoScored), and he has been a creative asset in Klopp’s side as he has also averaged 1.1 key passes.
