Liverpool are “genuinely interested” in Leeds United centre-back Ben White, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

The former Yorkshire Evening Post reporter has claimed via The Athletic’s website that Manchester United have also scouted the 22-year-old defender, who is currently on a season-long loan at Elland Road from Premier League club Brighton.

White has impressed in the Championship this season, playing every minute of every match under the charge of Marcelo Bielsa.

It is not at all surprising to see top of England’s top clubs become interested in the Poole-born centre-back.

OPINION

White has been superb for Leeds in the Championship this season. According to stats by WhoScored, White has averaged more interceptions in the second-tier than any other player [2.9] while he also ranks eighth for the number of average passes completed per outing [59.5]. White is still young at 22-years-of-age and is only going to get better in the next few years so as an extra option in the heart of Liverpool’s defence, Jurgen Klopp cannot be blamed for eyeing up the loaned-out Brighton defender. Liverpool do have four centre-back options in the first-team at the moment and Sepp van den Berg is someone who is starting to appear in cup matches as he continues his development. White could find it difficult to get game-time at Anfield but it is likely that he’ll feature in the Premier League next season. Whether that is with Brighton, Leeds or the reigning European champions, remains to be seen.
