Danny Mills named Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah in his Team of the Decade but opted to snub Reds defender Virgil Van Dijk when choosing his side.

The Sky Sports pundit revealed his Team of the Decade, with BetVictor uploading it on their Twitter account, and explained his choices to presenter Rob Wotton.

Mills when explaining his decision to have Salah in his team revealed that he believes the Reds winger has been exceptional over the course of three seasons and added that he ignored selecting Van Dijk as he hadn’t impressed over a long enough period.

“I just consider the amount of goals he has scored, the performances he puts in week-in-week out over the course of three seasons, I think exceptional,” said Mills on Football Centre (11:23am, Tuesday, November, 26th).

“That’s the difference between him and Van Dijk, he has done it over a longer period of time.”

OPINION

Mills selected Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany and Chelsea legend John Terry, so it’s not like Van Dijk missed out on making the cut to just anybody. After all, those centre-backs delivered the goods over a number of seasons and helped lift countless trophies for their sides, due to their impressive performances. I mean would Man City have won the Premier League title last season if Kompany hadn’t stepped up and scored a screamer against Leicester City? It’s certainly arguable based on the fact the Reds only ended up a point behind Pep Guardiola’s side. However, it does seem odd that he believes Van Dijk hasn’t impressed over a long enough period in the Premier League to be counted, whereas Salah has. The Dutch defender has been in the Premier League since 2015 after joining Southampton from Celtic and has made 132 appearances in the division. Whereas Salah has played 98 times in England’s top-flight, and while he did have a stint at Chelsea before arriving at Anfield in 2017 from AS Roma, he hardly got a look in at the London club with him playing only 19 times. So is Mills saying Van Dijk didn’t impress at the Saints? Because that can’t be right, otherwise why would the Reds have paid a staggering £75million for him (Source: BBC Sport).
