Former England international Danny Mills has questioned whether Liverpool centre back Joe Gomez will get enough game time at Anfield to be a Three Lions regular.

The debate over who Gareth Southgate’s first choice centre half partnership should be has been raging on of late, but Sky Sports pundit Mills believes the 22-year-old could be in trouble.

“He’s fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool,” he told talkSPORT [18/11; 08:14]. “He’s preferred [Dejan] Lovren to Gomez. I just think Gomez’s football is going to be limited this season.”

OPINION

There’s no doubt that Gomez has struggled for game time so far this campaign. The former Charlton Athletic man has made 11 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this term, but has only played 695 minutes of action [Source: Transfermarkt]. That equates to just 63 minutes per game, which isn’t typical of a centre back. The youngster is a fabulously gifted young footballer, we all know that, but Southgate likes his players to be playing regularly for their clubs. Unfortunately for Gomez he has Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Lovren ahead of him at the moment. Jurgen Klopp has his own agenda and, while he would surely love Gomez to go to the Euros and play regularly for England, his priority is to secure results and trophies for Liverpool. Harry Maguire, Fikayo Tomori and Tyrone Mings have all been playing on a regular basis for their clubs, which damages Gomez’s cause, and the Liverpool man likely falls into a similar boat to Manchester City’s John Stones at the moment.
