Andrew Robertson has revealed that he has not trained with Liverpool for the last two and a half weeks due to a niggling ankle injury that has ruled him out of Scotland’s upcoming matches in this international break.

Robertson, 25, has withdrawn from the Scotland squad after a challenge by Rodri in the win against Man City on Sunday saw his ankle problem get worse.

The former Hull left-back now admits that unless he has time off, he cannot see himself fully recovering from what has been a consistent issue for him in recent weeks.

“It’s a big disappointment for me to miss out,” said Robertson, as quoted by the Scotsman. “I don’t care what game it is, I want to play and my track record in the last five years has shown that.

“But for the last two and a half weeks, I’ve not trained at all for Liverpool. I’ve trained the day before a game, could only play the last 15 minutes against Genk in the Champions League and missed the Arsenal game in the League Cup.

“It’s a niggling injury which won’t go away unless I give it time. My ankle was already injured when a tackle from Rodri on me late in the game against Manchester City on Sunday opened it up again.”

OPINION

If Robertson has not been fully fit for a few weeks and still playing as good as he has done then we cannot wait to see what he can do when he is back to full fitness. Robertson was one of the best players on the pitch on Sunday when Liverpool won 3-1 against Man City to move eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table. He assisted his fourth goal of the match in the victory when his inch-perfect cross led to Mohamed Salah scoring the Reds’ second of the match. Robertson constantly caused a nuisance down the left-flank against Man City and he is without doubt the best left-back in British football at the moment. Scotland will struggle without Robertson because they are also without Kieran Tierney for their matches against Cyprus and Kazakhstan. Celtic’s Greg Taylor is more than likely going to be the starting left-back with those pair both out.
