Virgil van Dijk has been named in The Athletic’s Premier League Team of the Decade, as per journalist Oliver Lee.

The Dutchman has been a crucial figure for Liverpool since signing in January 2018, and his efforts have been duly noted.

Writing in a piece for the Athletic, Lee said: “I’ve gone with Van Dijk because his performance level at Liverpool has been astounding, as has the transformative effect he has had on a team that was woefully short of composure and resilience in defence before his arrival.

“The best central defender in the world over the past season and a half? Probably.”

OPINION

It speaks volumes as to just how good van Dijk has been when he walks into this side having only really played in the upper echelons of the Premier League for a little under two years right at the end of the decade, but the fact of the matter is that there have been few, if any, centre-backs who can genuinely compare to him in terms of the quality and consistency of his output over that period. Last season, he averaged a Whoscored rating of 7.44 for the Reds, while this term he has managed a score of 7.28. Those are high numbers that are only earned through week after week of hard work and top tier performances. Undoubtedly, van Dijk is a world class talent, and at this stage, nobody would really bat an eyelid if he is crowned Ballon d’Or winner. A European champion, potentially a Premier League winner this season, he deserves all the praise he is given.
