Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson is hoping to be fit for Sunday’s clash against Liverpool, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Brazilian international is a doubt for the trip to Anfield after picking up a thigh strain which forced him off in their 1-1 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Evening Standard report that his substitution was more precautionary, and Ederson himself does not consider the injury to be as serious as once thought despite leaving the ground in visible discomfort.

Ederson is set to undergo scans on Thursday, and Pep Guardiola confirmed that Claudio Bravo would replace the South American if needed.

OPINION

Well, this could certainly hand an early advantage to Liverpool going into this fixture already. Ederson, alongside Alisson, has been one of the standout keepers in the past couple of seasons, with the two Brazilians highly-regarded as two of the world’s best. Liverpool fans will surely be crossing their fingers that Ederson will miss out and that Bravo will step in, especially after the Chilean’s second-half cameo against Atalanta on Wednesday. In the space of 40 minutes, City’s reserve keeper had conceded a goal as well as being sent off after a rush of blood to the head, and the Reds will certainly be laughing at that thinking they could take advantage of the less-reliable stopper. City are likely to know much more after the scans on Thursday, but given that Ederson was in so much discomfort leaving the stadium, it would certainly be a surprise to see him fully fit in a matter of days. Either way, first blood appears to have gone to Liverpool, and the Reds will be looking forward to putting pressure on whichever keeper gets the nod for their rivals.
