Adrian Durham loves getting the rise out of people. A man of controversial footballing opinions, he has built a career on speaking his mind and watching carnage ensue, but even by his own high standards, his latest comments are wild. The talkSPORT host has suggested that Everton youngster Ton Davies has the potential to be “as good, if not better than Steven Gerrard was for Liverpool”. Just drink that in for a second. Hard to stomach, isn’t it? Sounds ludicrous, doesn’t it? Well, that’s certainly what most Kopites are thinking, and their indignation is understandable. After all, Gerrard was one of the greatest midfielders of the Premier League era, and while he may not have won the prize he coveted most, he did help guide the Reds to FA Cup and Champions League glory during his spell as captain. And this is no slight on Davies, but it’s just difficult to imagine the 21-year-old ever having that kind of success at Goodison Park. So far this season he has averaged two tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game, as well as a fairly poor 0.7 successful dribbles and no key passes, as per Whoscored. That hardly hints at a player with the same box-to-box prowess as Gerrard went on to have. He is still young, yes, but surely Durham is wide of the mark on this one.

By the time Gerrard was Davies age he’d won the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, League Cup (plus Super Cup and Charity Shield) Made almost 100 appearances for a club qualifying for the Champions League. Played at Euro 2000 and scored the opener for England in a 5-1 win in Munich.
