Ally McCoist has claimed that Liverpool’s luck could run out after not keeping a clean sheet in eight games.

After the Reds beat Genk 2-1 to go top of their Champions League group, both McCoist and Alan Brazil questioned whether or not they can continue their run of form with the apparent weakness in defence.

McCoist did heap praise on Jurgen Klopp’s side for the ability to grind out results during this season and mentioned the recent win over Aston Villa, and the victory against Sheffield United earlier in the campaign.

“They cannot keep a clean sheet, can they?” he said on talkSPORT.

“Looking at them, they’ve been excellent, absolutely excellent, and the results have been excellent – I don’t think they’ve kept a clean sheet in seven or eight.

“That luck, if you like, is going run out, or it’s a sign of a championship-winning team.”

Liverpool can extend their gap to nine points at the top of the Premier League if they beat Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

OPINION

It will be a big concern for Klopp that his side haven’t kept a clean sheet in their past eight games, but as long as they keep on picking up three points on a weekly basis in the top-flight. It is no coincidence that this apparent lack of form in defence aligns with Joel Matip’s injury. The Cameroon international has been one of the Reds’ standout players this season, cementing his spot alongside Virgil van Dijk. Klopp has tried to utilise both Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez in that hole in the past couple of months and neither have particularly impressed in doing so. When Matip returns that problem should disappear itself, and no matter what, Liverpool need to keep finding a way to win ugly while he is forced onto the sidelines until after the international break. The Reds will believe that they are showing signs of a championship-winning team rather than relying on luck.
