Trent Alexander-Arnold was lucky not to see red in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night, according to Darren Bent.

The Liverpool full-back appeared to catch Richarlison with his studs as the Brazilian lay on the ground at one point, but escaped punishment from the referee at the time.

And Sky Sports pundit Bent has suggested that he was fortunate not to be dismissed for the incident.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I think it was a little bit naughty, also Andy Robertson with the elbow into the back of Tom Davies’ head.

“I think they were both extremely fortunate, more so Trent because the Robertson one you might get a yellow card for. You could tell there was intent there in Trent’s one, to come down with your studs and blatantly… you look at the replay and think he’s got to go.

“To there not be anything, you’ve got to say they’ve got away with one there.”

OPINION

Bent might have a point here, you know. Alexander-Arnold certainly left a bit on Richarlison, and it’s hard not to look at the replays and think there was at least some modicum of intent from the England defender. He’s landed on the Brazilian when there was seemingly no reason to do so, and on another day, with another official, or for that matter with a VAR intervention, he could have been given his marching orders. Perhaps it was the rashness of a lifelong Kopite playing in the derby, but the youngster has to learn to control himself in situations like that or he could end up in a lot of trouble in the future. That incident aside, however, Alexander-Arnold actually had a good game defensively, making five tackles and two interceptions, as per Whoscored, so it was a shame to see him mar his outing with unnecessary recklessness.
