Former Republic of Ireland international Tony Cascarino has claimed that he ‘could see’ Watford winger Gerard Deulofeu at Liverpool.

The Spaniard put in a decent effort for the Hornets in their 2-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s team on Saturday, and Cascarino feels he has the quality to represent the Reds.

“Deulofeu caused Liverpool a lot of problems, because he always runs in behind, he wants to take players on and he’s very good at it,” he said on talkSPORT. “Deulofeu, I could see him in the Liverpool team.

“I know he’s been at Barcelona, Everton; he’s that kind of player who could fit into their system. He probably wouldn’t make the starting line-up but, like [Xherdan] Shaqiri, he could come in and do a fabulous job.”

OPINION

Thank goodness for that final sentence, because it kind of saved Cascarino from looking rather foolish. The only way that Deulofeu could ever function at Liverpool would be as a squad player. Simply put, he’d never be a regular starter for Klopp’s team. However, like Cascarino says, he could fulfil the Shaqiri role of coming in every now and then and providing an added bit of creativity when it’s needed. The 25-year-old was one of the key men for Watford in what was a battling effort on Saturday. As per WhoScored.com, the Spaniard had one shot – on target – and completed one successful dribble. The big thing, though, is that he was fouled three times. That shows that he got under the Liverpool players’ skins. He is a nuisance, and he’s certainly got tremendous natural ability. However, the fact that he’s not the hardest worker, combined with his Everton past, probably rules him out of making a switch to Anfield any time soon. Sorry, Tony.
