Former England international Chris Sutton has poked fun at Manchester City fans by claiming that they are ‘jealous’ of Liverpool having won the Champions League.

The BBC Sport pundit was responding to a phone call from a Man City supporter complaining that the Reds are the ‘media darlings’, something Sutton refuted in his inimitable way.

“Well I wouldn’t say they’re the media darlings,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “There has to be a recognition that they’re a very good team and, while Manchester City have been dominant in this country…

“You know, you’re probably a bit jealous, City fans, of Liverpool because they’ve got the big trophy, the Champions League.”

OPINION

This is typical Sutton, isn’t it? He knows exactly who he’s got on the line – a disgruntled Man City fan – and so he’s poking the bear to try and get a response. This is him looking to create good radio, of course, which is his job when he’s on 606, but it’s his personality as well. He’s a spiky character and he likes winding other people up, including City supporters, apparently. Fans of Pepe Guardiola’s side probably are a bit jealous of Liverpool having won Europe’s premier club competition, because it’s one of the only trophies their club haven’t won in the Abu Dhabi era. So they would have liked to have won the Champions League last season, of course, but the same can be said of Liverpool supporters and the Premier League title. In many ways the two teams would have liked to have swapped their trophy wins from the last campaign around. However, that cannot be, but there’s still the chance that they’ll end up swapping this term. Let’s wait and see.
