Peter Crouch has claimed that Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri is a “genius”, and deserves to play more often for the Reds.

The Swiss international returned to the starting XI for the 5-2 demolition of Everton on Wednesday evening, and ex-Kop hitman Crouch fully endorsed his reinstatement.

Speaking on Amazon Prime prior to the match (December 4th, 19.30), he said: “I played with Shaq at Stoke, and he’s so technically gifted.

“He warrants a place in this team any day of the week.

“Does he offer you enough defensively? Not for me, but he’s a genius, and absolute genius.”

OPINION

This was the Shaqiri that Liverpool fans have been crying out to see for an age. The Swiss pocket rocket was sublime from the first whistle, and he didn’t for one second look like a player making his first Premier League start of the season. With two shots, a key pass, two successful dribbles, and a wonderfully taken goal, Shaq was good value for his Whoscored rating of 7.63. The key now though, is for him to keep this momentum going. Far too often we have seen Shaqiri put in little bursts of form here and there, and now it is time for him to properly kick on and become a real asset to Jurgen Klopp’s squad. If he can do that, then there is no reason whatsoever why he can’t be the extra boost the Reds need to run away with the title race in the second half of this season. Superb stuff.
