Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to fire a warning to Liverpool after his beloved Leicester City beat Aston Villa on Sunday to keep the gap at summit of the Premier League at eight points.

The Foxes saw off the Villans with relative ease in a 4-1 stroll at Villa Park, and evidently emboldened by that result, the Match of the Day host issued a battle cry to the Reds.

Writing on his personal account, he said: “Watch out Liverpool, The Foxes are on your tail.”

OPINION

This is a classic piece of Lineker cheek, but the underlying message might actually be a pretty serious one. After this weekend’s round of Premier League results, the Foxes are now eight points behind Liverpool, but perhaps more significantly, are six points clear of Manchester City in third. That means that Jurgen Klopp’s men are 14 points ahead of the defending champions, and right now, that lead looks pretty insurmountable. Of course, this is football and this is Liverpool, and so nobody will be counting their chickens until they have hatched, but things are looking more promising than they have done in many, many years. Crucially, Leicester will play City on December 21st, and at the moment, you wouldn’t bet against them getting a result. Win that and the gap between second and third could be nine points by Christmas. The Foxes then play Liverpool on Boxing Day. Win that, and the gap between first and second could be as little as five points come the new year. Perhaps Leicester really are the only side who can catch Liverpool now…
