Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that it is ‘inevitable’ that Reds legend Steven Gerrard will succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

The Rangers boss has made positive steps during his season and a half at Ibrox, but Murphy feels there will come a time when the 39-year-old returns to Merseyside.

“Club legends are all the rage now, with Frank Lampard doing well at Chelsea — notwithstanding Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat by Bournemouth — and Freddie Ljungberg and Duncan Ferguson being asked to mind the fort at struggling Arsenal and Everton,” he wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“It looks inevitable Steven Gerrard will return to Liverpool one day as manager, even if it’s not in the foreseeable future, with Jurgen Klopp at the helm and his own new contract at Rangers.”

OPINION

Murphy is absolutely spot on, it does seem inevitable that Gerrard will be back at Anfield one day, this time in the manager’s dugout. There really are no other candidates who hold the same lustre for the Liverpool fans as Gerrard would. Who else would be out there who could capture the imagination like the former Reds skipper? You’d assume that people like Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel and Nuno Espirito Santo may perhaps be on some sort of shortlist whenever Klopp decides to call time on his Anfield tenure. However, Gerrard would be head and shoulders above them as favourite, providing he doesn’t spectacularly mess things up in Glasgow in the meantime. If he can lead Gers to a league title or two between now and 2024 – when both his and Klopp’s recent contract extensions expire – then all the better. Inevitable is a strong word, of course, but in this case it’s the only one that fits.
